Make the Change with Arts-based Methods –event took place at Laurea Tikkurila on Thursday 17th May 2018. Event gathered together academics, professionals and students from the fields of culture, arts, pedagogy and welfare. Event was part of Erasmus+ funded Higher Education Institution for Societal Engagement (HEISE) –project, where partners seek to find solutions for societal challenges using arts-based methods.
Seminar started with presentations about the aims of HEISE-project, societal impact assessment and the impact of arts. In the learning café session participants got to familiarize themselves with different challenge solving projects carried out by some Heise project’s partner universities: School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Aalto university), Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT), Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Sibelius Academy (University of the Arts Helsinki). Participants got to share their experiences and knowledge and to create something creative together.
Participants visited the Multisensory Space that is an easily modified space where images, sounds, smells, tastes and items create diverse learning environments. Different multisensory materials provoke thoughts, memories, and feelings. The method is a good way to involve and inspire local people to take action.
At the end of the day thoughts, ideas and feelings were shared by the Laurea’s Playback Theatre group. All and all the day was a success – it introduced the importance and broad possibilities of the arts-based methods in societal engagement.
